To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our 2023 rankings named University of Southern California the most popular school in the United States for students working on their doctor’s degree. USC is located in Los Angeles, California and has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 1,914 doctor’s degrees to qualified students.
Of those students who received their degree, 57% were women.
USC does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. During the 2019-2020 year, about 82% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
Out of the 1,181 schools in the United States that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Florida landed the # 2 spot on the list. UF is located in Gainesville, Florida and has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 1,778 doctor’s degrees to qualified students.
Of those students who received their degree, 54% were women.

The excellent doctor’s degree programs at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor helped the school earn the #5 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular schools in the United States. Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the large public school handed out 1,562 doctor’s degree awards in 2020-2021.

Ohio State University - Main Campus landed the #6 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular doctor’s degree programs. Ohio State is a public institution located in Columbus, Ohio. The school has a large population, and it awarded 1,723 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 54% of those degree recipients were women.

With a ranking of #9, University of Washington - Seattle Campus did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their doctor’s degree. This large public school is located in Seattle, Washington, and it awarded 1,479 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 55% of those degree recipients were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at UW Seattle. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 7% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.

Harvard University came in at #10 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools ranking. This large private not-for-profit school is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and it awarded 1,444 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 47% of those degree recipients were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at Harvard. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 96% took at least some of their classes online.
University of Illinois at Chicago did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #11 on the list. UIC is a public institution located in Chicago, Illinois. The school has a large population, and it awarded 1,425 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 57% were women.
One thing to take note of is that UIC does offer online graduate classes in some areas. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 95% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
Capella University ranked #12 on this year’s Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools list. Minneapolis, Minnesota is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private for-profit school handed out doctor’s degrees to 1,437 students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 77% were women.
Since the graduate programs at Capella University are online, the school is an excellent choice for graduate students who need more flexibility than what is offered at some other schools.
Nova Southeastern University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #13 on the list. Nova Southeastern University is a large private not-for-profit school located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida that handed out 1,622 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 65% were women.

Rutgers University - New Brunswick landed the #14 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular doctor’s degree programs. Rutgers New Brunswick is a public institution located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The school has a large population, and it awarded 1,366 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.

One thing to take note of is that UC Berkeley does offer online graduate classes in some areas. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 90% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
Boston University came in at #20 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools ranking. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, the large private not-for-profit school handed out 1,170 doctor’s degree awards in 2020-2021.
