Music is the #37 most popular major in the country with 7,675 degrees and certificates awarded in 2020-2021.
It's not easy to decide which program to enroll in when you have so many options available. You can choose a traditional brick and mortar school, or with the growth of online education, you can attend a school half-way across the country without even leaving your house. Also there are many trade schools that offer short-term programs that open up more career options.
To assist you in seeing some of the education options that are available to you, Grad Degree Search has created its Best Value Music Schools in the New England Region ranking. Our analysis looked at 17 schools in the New England Region to see which programs offered the best value experiences for music students with the aim of identifying those quality schools that are more affordable than some of their counterparts.
Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.
In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.

Top 10 Best Music Schools
Our analysis found University of Hartford to be the best value school for music students who want to pursue a degree in the New England Region . UHart is a medium-sized private not-for-profit school located in the midsize city of West Hartford.
UHart undergraduate students pay an average of $44,885 in tuition and fees each year.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend Dartmouth College. The school came in at #2 on this year’s Best Value Music Schools in the New England Region list. Dartmouth is a moderately-sized private not-for-profit school located in the remote town of Hanover.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Rhode Island. It ranked #4 on our 2023 Best Value Music Schools in the New England Region list. URI is a large public school located in the large suburb of Kingston.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at URI are $33,354 a year.
Out of the 17 schools in the New England Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of New Hampshire - Main Campus landed the # 5 spot on the list. Located in the small suburb of Durham, UNH is a public school with a large student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at UNH are $37,202 per year.
University of Connecticut came in at #6 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Music Schools in the New England Region ranking. UCONN is a very large public school located in the suburb of Storrs.
UCONN undergraduate students pay an average of $41,192 in tuition and fees each year.
University of Southern Maine landed the #7 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best value music programs. Located in the city of Portland, University of Southern Maine is a public school with a medium-sized student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at University of Southern Maine are $23,881 per year.
With a ranking of #8, University of Massachusetts - Lowell did quite well on this year’s best value schools for music students. UMass Lowell is a fairly large public school located in the large suburb of Lowell.
