Our analysis looked at 127 schools in the Plains States Region to see which graduate certificate programs were the most popular for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our 2023 rankings named Capella University the most popular school in the Plains States Region for students working on their graduate certificate. Capella University is a private for-profit institution located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The school has a large population, and it awarded 1,322 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 84% of those degree recipients were women.
Interested in an online degree? Then you definitely want to check out Capella University. Every graduate student at the school took at least one class online.
Out of the 127 schools in the Plains States Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Iowa landed the # 2 spot on the list. University of Iowa is a large public school located in Iowa City, Iowa that handed out 1,262 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.

Around 59% of those degree recipients were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at Missouri State. In 2019-2020 about 72% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
A rank of #4 on this year’s list means University of Missouri - Columbia is a great place for students working on their graduate certificate. Columbia, Missouri is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out graduate certificates to 472 students in 2020-2021.
Around 63% of those degree recipients were women.
If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Mizzou does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. In 2019-2020 about 67% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
With a ranking of #6, Missouri University of Science and Technology did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Missouri University of Science and Technology is located in Rolla, Missouri and has a medium-sized student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 429 graduate certificates to qualified students.
Of those students who received their degree, 15% were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at Missouri University of Science and Technology. During the 2019-2020 year, about 68% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.

Webster University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #10 on the list. This medium-sized private not-for-profit school is located in Saint Louis, Missouri, and it awarded 271 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 53% were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at Webster. During the 2019-2020 year, about 61% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
University of St Thomas Minnesota came in at #11 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Plains States Region ranking. Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the medium-sized private not-for-profit school awarded 267 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 44% were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at UST MN. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 80% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
Iowa State University landed the #12 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. Located in Ames, Iowa, the large public school handed out 230 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 67% were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at Iowa State. In fact, around 54% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
With a ranking of #13, A T Still University of Health Sciences did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Kirksville, Missouri is the setting for this small institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out graduate certificates to 220 students in 2020-2021.
Around 55% of those degree recipients were women.
Since the graduate programs at A T Still University of Health Sciences are online, the school is an excellent choice for graduate students who need more flexibility than what is offered at some other schools.
Wichita State University landed the #14 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. WSU is located in Wichita, Kansas and has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 200 graduate certificates to qualified students.
Around 53% of those degree recipients were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at WSU. In fact, around 37% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities landed the #14 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. University of Minnesota - Twin Cities is a large public school located in Minneapolis, Minnesota that handed out 212 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Graduate Certificate recipients from UMN Twin Cities accumulate an average of $19,400 in student debt by the time they complete their degree. Of those students who received their degree, 69% were women.
One thing to take note of is that UMN Twin Cities does offer online graduate classes in some areas. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 65% took at least some of their classes online.
Kansas State University came in at #16 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Plains States Region ranking. Located in Manhattan, Kansas, the large public school awarded 201 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.

Hamline University ranked #17 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Plains States Region list. Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the small private not-for-profit school handed out 194 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.

If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Hamline does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 78% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
With a ranking of #18, Washington University in St Louis did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Washington University in St Louis is a fairly large private not-for-profit school located in Saint Louis, Missouri that handed out 180 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 52% were women.
One thing to take note of is that WUSTL does offer online graduate classes in some areas. In 2019-2020 about 72% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Creighton University came in at #19 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Plains States Region ranking. Creighton is a medium-sized private not-for-profit school situated in Omaha, Nebraska. It awarded 166 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 63% of those degree recipients were women.

With a ranking of #20, University of Missouri - St Louis did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. UMSL is a public institution located in Saint Louis, Missouri. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 158 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota landed the #21 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. This small private not-for-profit school is located in Winona, Minnesota, and it awarded 152 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.

Online graduate courses are available at SMU MN, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. During the 2019-2020 year, about 86% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
The College of Saint Scholastica came in at #22 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Plains States Region ranking. This small private not-for-profit school is located in Duluth, Minnesota, and it awarded 143 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.

St. Scholastica does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. During the 2019-2020 year, about 50% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
With a ranking of #23, University of Nebraska - Lincoln did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. UNL is located in Lincoln, Nebraska and has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 130 graduate certificates to qualified students.
Graduate Certificate recipients from UNL accumulate an average of $23,815 in student debt by the time they complete their degree. Around 54% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that UNL does offer online graduate classes in some areas. During the 2019-2020 year, about 48% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
University of Central Missouri did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #24 on the list. This fairly large public school is located in Warrensburg, Missouri, and it awarded 102 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 66% were women.
One thing to take note of is that UCM does offer online graduate classes in some areas. In 2019-2020 about 46% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Lindenwood University ranked #25 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Plains States Region list. Located in Saint Charles, Missouri, the medium-sized private not-for-profit school awarded 94 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 69% were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at Lindenwood University. In fact, around 74% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
