Our analysis looked at 10 schools in the New England Region to see which doctor's degree programs offered the best value experiences for history students with the aim of identifying those quality schools that are more affordable than some of their counterparts.
When determining this ranking, we place a high emphasis on the school's quality as well as its sticker price. Even though a college may be affordable, it may not offer value. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.
Our calculations use out-of-state tuition and fees in our nationwide and regional rankings. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.

Top 10 Best History Doctor's Degree Schools
Our 2023 rankings named Boston College the best value school in the New England Region for history students working on their doctor’s degree. Located in the small city of Chestnut Hill, Boston College is a private not-for-profit college with a fairly large student population.
Boston College graduate students pay an average of $32,722 in tuition and fees each year.
Out of the 10 schools in the New England Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Yale University landed the # 2 spot on the list. Yale is a fairly large private not-for-profit school located in the medium-sized city of New Haven.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state graduate students at Yale are $45,700 a year.
Yale also made our Best History Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region list, coming in at #5.
A rank of #3 on this year’s list means Northeastern University is a great value for history students working on their doctor’s degree. Located in the large city of Boston, Northeastern is a private not-for-profit college with a very large student population.

A rank of #4 on this year’s list means Harvard University is a great value for history students working on their doctor’s degree. Harvard is a very large private not-for-profit school located in the midsize city of Cambridge.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state graduate students at Harvard are $52,170 a year.
In addition to its best value ranking, and one of the reasons why the school is on the list, Harvard is ranked #2 for overall quality for history in the New England Region .
A rank of #5 on this year’s list means Brown University is a great value for history students working on their doctor’s degree. Located in the medium-sized city of Providence, Brown is a private not-for-profit college with a large student population.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state graduate students at Brown are $62,083 a year.
Brown also took the #3 spot in our Best History Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region rankings.
University of New Hampshire - Main Campus landed the #6 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best value doctor’s degree history programs. Located in the small suburb of Durham, UNH is a public school with a large student population.
UNH graduate students pay an average of $29,992 in tuition and fees each year.
Boston University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best places for history students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #7 on the list. Boston U is a very large private not-for-profit school located in the large city of Boston.
Out-of-state tuition fees for graduate students at Boston U are $59,418 per year.
In addition to its great value ranking, Boston U is in the top 20% of all schools on our Best History Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region list.
