Out of all the majors we analyze each year, general education was ranked #12 in the country. In fact 21,189 degrees and certificates were handed out in 2020-2021.
With all the programs available today, it can be tough to choose which one is the best for you. You can choose a traditional brick and mortar school, or with the growth of online education, you can attend a school half-way across the country without even leaving your house. Also there are many trade schools that offer short-term programs that open up more career options.

This report analyzed 48 schools in the Plains States Region to see which ones were the most popular programs for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from the General Education program at each school on the list.

Top 10 Most Popular General Education Schools
A rank of #2 on this year’s list means Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is a great place for general education students. SMU MN is a small private not-for-profit school located in the distant town of Winona.
The excellent programs at Fort Hays State University helped the school earn the #3 place on this year’s ranking of the best general education schools in the Plains States Region . Located in the town of Hays, FHSU is a public school with a large student population.

Out of the 48 schools in the Plains States Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Capella University landed the # 5 spot on the list. Capella University is a fairly large private for-profit school located in the large city of Minneapolis.
With a ranking of #6, Southwest Minnesota State University did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for general education students. Southwest Minnesota State University is a moderately-sized public school located in the remote town of Marshall.

With a ranking of #10, Lindenwood University did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for general education students. Located in the city of Saint Charles, Lindenwood University is a private not-for-profit college with a medium-sized student population.
